RANCH REIMAGINED
LIKE-FOR-LIKE REBUILD + ADU, ALTADENA
STATUS: PASSED PLANNING REVIEW
This project rebuilds a beloved board-and-batten ranch with classic indoor-outdoor features that served one family for decades. The like-for-like replacement preserves key elements—such as the breezeway entry, the pass-through kitchen window, deep covered patio, large glazed openings from the living room to the patio, and the kitchen-dining-living relationship that made the original home perfect for entertaining.
Departing from the original structure in plan, roofline, and material character, the rebuild eliminates the formal living room in favor of a larger, well-equipped kitchen and pantry, reflecting the owner's passion for food and community. The breezeway which welcomed family and friends directly into the backyard where the pizza oven was and will be located has been enlarged and a skylight and planter have been added. The North edge of the roof has been changed to lift toward the mountains, enhancing views and making room for solar infrastructure. The primary bedroom has been relocated so as to open onto a private courtyard garden at the rear of the house. A second-story ADU with aging in place features has been added to provide flexibility, offering space for extended family, guests, or future needs. Fire-resilient upgrades complete this thoughtful transformation—rooted in memory, built for the future.
