ADU, Accessory Dwelling Unit, Ground Up Construction

The Client’s retirement plan included an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in their backyard. The property backs up to the wild steep granite hillside of Deb’s Park. The Client planned to create an income property but which building would become the house, and which was the rental, changed during design. The couple decided to move into the smaller, but custom designed building that hugged the hillside. And rented the 2 bedroom house.

The ADU is oriented towards Debs Park, which allowed us to develop two outdoor spaces for privacy and autonomy, and make the most of the natural setting.
The simple execution of exposed materials in the new dwelling compliments the existing structures. The existing 1946 house and garage are exposed concrete brick. Both the main house and the ADU have vaulted ceilings and polished concrete floors.
The ADU is clad in red corrugated metal invoking the traditional stugas of the Client’s Swedish heritage.
